Hey all. My wife and I are planning a remodel and keep hearing about the “design-build” process. How is it actually different from hiring a designer and then a contractor? Anyone go through a structured process from start to finish?

Hey. The biggest difference is that one team owns the whole outcome. We used Alta Group Remodeling, and their process is literally five steps: Discover, Plan, Build, Refine, Enjoy. In Discover they spent real time learning how we live, Plan produced detailed drawings and selections, Build was the construction, and Refine was a punch-list phase focused on the small details that make it feel finished. Because the same people designed and built it, nobody blamed anybody when something needed adjusting. Honestly, the Refine phase is what I’d look for in any contractor, that’s where good work becomes great work.
