I’m a dad of two, a 6-year-old daughter and a 13-year-old son

Good morning. I’m a dad of two, a 6-year-old daughter and a 13-year-old son, and I’m looking for something we can all do together on weekends that isn’t another screen. My son claims everything is boring these days, my daughter wants to make crafts all the time. I was thinking pottery could work for both ages but not sure if studios take little kids or if it’s adults only. We’re in Austin, close to downtown. My wife would probably join us too, so it would be the whole family. Has anyone taken kids of different ages to a pottery class together?

Different ages is actually where pottery works really well, everyone ends up doing their own thing at the same table. We go to pottery classes for adults and kids in Austin at Pottery Studio 1, they take kids from three years old, so your daughter is fine, and they run classes for teens and adults too. The instructor helps the little ones with shaping and lets the older ones work more on their own, so my teenager didn’t feel babysat. In two hours my daughter made a little vase covered in dots, my son made a lopsided mug he’s secretly proud of. Pieces are fired after class and ready in two or three weeks, which gives the kids something to look forward to. It’s a bit messy, so bring old clothes. If you like it, they also do kids’ birthday parties there.
