    Hello everyone.

    I’m trying to understand how much shaft and coupling alignment affects the performance and lifespan of an industrial gearbox. Can even a small alignment issue cause excessive vibration, bearing wear, or premature gear damage?

    What methods do maintenance teams typically use to check alignment accurately? I’ve heard that laser alignment systems can provide better results than traditional methods, but I’d like to know whether they are necessary for every application.

    How often should alignment be checked, especially after gearbox repairs or equipment relocation? I’d appreciate any practical advice from technicians who regularly work with industrial gearbox installations.

    Yes, even small misalignment causes excessive vibration, accelerated bearing wear, and premature gear damage from uneven cyclic loading on components not built for it.

    For checking alignment, traditional methods include straightedge/feeler gauge checks and dial indicator methods (rim-and-face or reverse-indicator). Laser alignment systems are faster and more accurate and are now the industry standard, though not strictly necessary for slow-speed, low-criticality equipment. For moderate-to-high speed or heavily loaded applications, laser alignment is worth using, and many gearbox repair services now include it as a standard step when a unit comes in for rebuild.

    Alignment should always be checked after any gearbox repair, coupling replacement, or equipment relocation. Otherwise, annual checks or checks during scheduled shutdowns are typical, with more frequent checks if vibration monitoring shows signs of misalignment or the foundation is prone to shifting.
